Trees near a house can be beautiful, cooling and full of birds. But when branches hang directly over the roof or are very close, they can cause trouble over time.
Falling leaves can clog gutters and downpipes, leading to water overflow and damp. Branches rubbing against the roof in wind can damage tiles or shingles. In strong storms, large limbs can break and fall onto the roof, causing serious damage. Roots from very large trees can sometimes affect foundations if they’re extremely close.
Overgrown trees also keep areas of the roof in constant shade, which encourages moss and algae growth and keeps surfaces damp.
This doesn’t mean you must remove every tree, just manage them. Regular pruning to keep branches clear of the roof and checking tree health reduces the long-term risk.
