How can leaving a light on a timer help when you’re away for a few days?

An empty, dark home night after night can look obviously unoccupied from outside. A simple plug-in timer or smart bulb that turns a lamp on for a few hours in the evening creates the impression that someone is still there.

You don’t need to light up the whole house – just a lamp in a visible room, like the living room or near the entrance, is enough to make things feel “lived in”. It’s especially handy in winter when it gets dark early.

Timers also mean you’re not wasting electricity all night. The light goes on and off at set times without you having to rely on a neighbour or leave a bulb on 24/7.

It’s not a complete security system, of course, but as part of a layered approach it’s a cheap, simple step that makes your home look less obviously empty.
